Safer Smart Phone Usage
This module — authored by engineer and EMF consultant Jeromy Johnson — provides practical, experience-based guidance on how to use smartphones in ways that minimize radiofrequency (RF) and electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. It is designed for Building Biology practitioners who want to confidently advise clients on one of the most common EMF concerns they will encounter.
The course is organized into three sections.
Section I addresses the most frequently asked client questions about smartphone safety in a Q&A format. Topics covered include why SAR ratings and RF-shielding phone cases offer little real protection; why Air Tube headsets are preferred over wired or Bluetooth options; how to evaluate Faraday bags; the differences between 5G C-Band and mmWave technology and their real-world health implications; why Wi-Fi is generally preferable to cellular data; how GPS works without RF emissions; how to manage screen flicker and blue light exposure; and how Android smartphones can be configured to enter a low-EMF “Doze mode” that eliminates constant RF pulsing.
Section II focuses on specific low-EMF smartphone recommendations — particularly the Samsung A16 and A36 — and provides step-by-step instructions for configuring Android settings to disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, 5G, and mobile data while retaining the ability to receive calls and texts via 4G LTE VoLTE.
Section III introduces an ultra-low-EMF method for wiring a smartphone using a DC-powered fiber optic kit, which eliminates not only RF exposure but also the AC electric fields and electromagnetic interference (EMI) that standard wired connections can introduce.
Throughout the course, the author draws on 15 years of personal experience as an electrically sensitive individual and EMF consultant. The course emphasizes that smart phone safety is primarily about behavior and settings management — not products — and equips practitioners with the knowledge and language to help even highly sensitive clients use modern technology without compromising their health.
