I can’t believe we’re already through January! If this first month is an indication of things to come, this year is going to be a heck of a ride.
New Seminar and Certification
We’ve just rolled out our newest seminar and certification. Building Biology Interior Design (BBID) is a professional certification that explores interior design as a vital interface between human health, ecological balance, and the built environment. Drawing from nature, cultural traditions, and both historical and contemporary research, the program supports a design practice that creates spaces that feel coherent, nourishing, and alive.
The five-day, in-person Interior Design master class (BBI 216: Building Biology & Interior Design) is authored and taught by Lauren Riddei and Clay Ruby, and brings together science, design intelligence, material health, sensitivity, and perceptual awareness to help designers create spaces that support mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
Because BBID lays the groundwork with existing BBI seminars and classes, 216 is a quick, efficient, and cost-effective path for existing BBEC and BBNC graduates to add another professional designation. Shoot us an email if you have any specific questions.
Rediscovering BBI’s Roots
As I write this, I am in Rosenheim, Germany, visiting with the director and staff at the Institut für Baubiologie + Nachhaltigkeit IBN. For those of you who don’t know, our founder, the German architect Helmut Ziehe was an early graduate of IBN, before relocating to the United States and starting our institute. IBN continues to be the wellspring for Building Biology-related research and recently released the newest version of the Standards of Biological Measurement (SBM), essentially the bible for working building biologists.

Winfried Schneider, long-time director and son of founder Dr. Anton Schneider – the father of Building Biology – is in the process of stepping down from his directorial role and passing the reins to Stefan Sellner, building biology professional with a background in practical construction and consulting. He trained as a Building Biology Consultant through IBN, and before becoming director he ran his own consulting office and worked extensively in the field, guiding builders and homeowners through construction decisions.
I had the honor and opportunity to sit with the IBN brain trust of Winfried, Johannes Schmidt, and Stefan to discuss the future of this vital science, and explore ways in which we can support each other’s missions. More to come as the year progresses.
A Newly Updated Cell Phone Course
Jeromy Johnson, M.S., has authored a new cell phone course, reflecting the most up-to-date science. We will be rolling this out in the next month, so keep an eye out for an email when this goes live. Jeromy holds an advanced degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering and worked in Silicon Valley for 15 years. In 2011, he became electrically sensitive and had to solve this issue for himself. Since then, he has helped over 3,000 families create healthy homes.
Jeromy has a trusted, solutions-focused EMF website: emfanalysis.com, an educational book called How to Find a Healthy Home and his TEDx talk Wireless Wake-up Call has nearly two million views.
BBI Scholarship Donations
BBI has donated 10 scholarships to our foundational home-study course 101: Natural Healthy Buildings. The recipient organization, Change the Air Foundation, is doing superlative work in driving change for healthier indoor air quality. I encourage you to check out their great work and informative website here.
Course of the Month
Our Course of the Month, which is 50% off, is Vetting Materials. This course provides the vital information with which architects, builders, and consumers can learn to recognize indoor air hazards and how to avoid them. Topics include combined exposures, sick building syndrome, building-related illness, multiple chemical sensitivity, electro-hypersensitivity, materials research, safety data sheets.
