Announcing the Petra Jebens-Zirkel Memorial Scholarship Winners

BBA Scholarships offered by the Women in Building Biology group

It is with great pleasure that the Women in Building Biology group introduces three recipients of the Petra Jebens-Zirkel Memorial Scholarship – through their responses about what most interests them about this field.

Izumi Camallani (Peru):

“As an architect passionate about Peru’s architectural heritage, I’m deeply interested in integrating building biology principles into the preservation of historic buildings and archaeological sites. I believe that combining traditional restoration techniques with innovative and health-conscious materials can enhance the integrity and livability of these spaces. I am particularly drawn to researching sustainable construction materials and exploring how these historic environments can be thoughtfully integrated into the rapidly growing urban fabric of our cities. Building biology offers a path to achieve this by honoring cultural memory while improving the quality of life through biocompatible and regenerative design strategies. This scholarship represents a key step toward merging my conservation background with a healthier architectural approach.”

Tauheedah Jackson (USA):

“What excites me the most about Building Biology is its holistic approach, which establishes a powerful connection between our health and the environments we live in. As the founder of Ntrs Bliss, a company dedicated to creating essential oil-based cleaning products, I am passionate about promoting toxic-free homes that embrace the beauty of nature. By incorporating herbs and biodegradable ingredients into our cleaning routines, we can transform our living spaces into havens of health and well-being. Imagine eliminating conventional cleaning products from our homes! Together, we can rejuvenate our cells, support our families, strengthen our communities and protect our planet. Let’s embark on this exciting journey toward a cleaner and healthier future!”

Liana Soll (USA):

“I am humbled to receive this scholarship honoring Petra Jebens-Zirkel. With my background in law and public health and ample experience overcoming environmental insults, illness and injury, I deeply appreciate the importance of building biology for healing and thriving—particularly living in a low toxin, mold-free environment, supporting circadian rhythms and mitigating nonnative EMF exposures. In light of generational increases in wireless technology and being an urbanite with electrosensitivity, I am most drawn to learn about electromagnetic radiation within the building biology universe, so I am empowered to serve as advocate-educator helping others navigate the invisible rainbow. That said, I am delighted to be part of this community and excited for this opportunity and journey, wherever it ultimately leads!”

Petra was an award-winning architect and building biologist who established the Instituto Español de Baubiologie (IEB) in 2009 and was its president until her passing in 2023. Her warm nature and dedication have left the built and living legacy of the more than 100 projects she designed and the mentorship of countless practitioners. The funds for this scholarship were initially raised through the Women in Building Biology Speaker Series, in which she presented in both 2022 and 2023. Sincere thanks to all the generous donors, to Helmut Ziehe, founder of the Building Biology Institute, and to the leaders and teachers of the Building Biology Institute.
